RAMD edge UiTM in hockey league final

By Y.P. SIVAM

RAMD became the overall champions of the Selangor Hockey League when they edged UiTM 3-2 in the final at the Pandamaran Hockey Stadium in Klang recently.

Hardworking Noor Mohamad Othman was RAMD’s hero in their come-from-behind win in the exciting match which saw both teams playing an attacking game.

Celebration time: RAMD players celebrating their victory.

UiTM, the Division One champions, took the lead in the 13th minute when Adam Mohd Kadir scored. But RAMD equalised in the 20th minute through Muhamad Junaidi Ghazali.

UiTM regained their lead in the 35th minute when Nazmi Kamarudin sounded the board from a penalty corner. RAMD, were not prepared to throw in the towel and kept charging ahead. In the 51st minute, Said Ramad scored from a penalty corner to make it 2-2.

Ten minutes later, RAMD were rewarded with a penalty corner and Noor Mohamad made no mistake. UiTM kept pressing for the equaliser but it did not come and RAMD were crowned as the overall champions.

RAMD team manager Ahmad Azrul Mat commended his players for their gutsy display.

“Despite trailing twice, the players did not give up. The victory was because of their diligent team work and commitment,’’ said Ahmad.

As the champions RAMD, who finished second in Division One, received RM3,000 while UiTM returned with RM1,500. UiTM’s Izzwan Mohamed Salleh was named as the Man of the Match (final) while RAMD goalkeeper Megat Mohd Norazrul was voted as the Best Player of the Tournament.

Ouch!: RAMD skipper Azman Hassan going down after a tussle with UiTM’s Muhamad Zulhafiz Mohd Ali.

Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah gave away the prizes to the winning teams.

Organising chairman Datuk Subahan Kamal, who is also the Selangor Hockey Association (SHA) deputy president, said they were pleased with the conclusion of the league, revived after seven years.

“We have gone through great pain to organise the league. For SHA this is a beginning and we have an excellent team in the organising committee. They had worked tirelessly to make the league a reality as well as a success,’’ said Subahan.
